Breaking All of The Rules!

A few days ago, I published a post entitled, “It’s Officially  Time to Celebrate” The post was written in celebration of one of my greatest accomplishments: self-publishing my first book, “Every Day Isn’t Perfect, Volume I: Change Begins With You First.” After publishing my book, I started to think about the answers to some pretty interesting questions. As I thought of the answers to more and more questions, I knew that I had to share the answers with you! I do believe they will help you to get to know me better.

Why did you decide to write, “Every Day Isn’t Perfect?” With so much negativity in the world, I wanted to put something positive out into the world. I wanted to help
make a difference. I wanted to give people hope. I wanted to write something thEDIPat would change/impact people’s lives. I personally know that words can change a person’s life…because words changed my life.

What lessons did you learn along your writing journey? My book uses a combination of inspirational short stories and prose (poems) to teach life lessons. It is an anthology (a collection). Prior to writing, “Every Day Isn’t Perfect,” people told me that anthologies were dead. Some of those same people agreed that poetry was dead. You will be surprised at the number of people who said, “You shouldn’t write poetry, because that is not what people love to buy/read. Now romance is where the money is at.” And I did give their opinions some consideration. When I first started blogging, I decided to turn one of my short stories into a romance novel. But I quickly discovered that writing a romance novel did not make my heart flutter the same way writing short stories and poetry did. Sometimes, after reading one of my short stories or poems my mind is like, “Wow! You wrote that!” I would encourage a writer to write whatever makes your heart happy. Write whatever makes your heart flutter. Write a story that you are proud of! Write a book that makes your mind say, “Wow! I wrote that!”

What is the most important lesson you have learned? Writing has the power to change, impact, and touch someone’s life through the use of words! Words have power! The power to heal people.

Where do your ideas for your short stories and poems come from? People are my inspiration. Insight comes from observing, listening, and feeling others as well as myself. For me, writing happens only after reflection.

Did you follow all of the rules and recommendations of other writers? I have read many blogs/articles that say, “You should write at least a MILLION words a day or just try to keep writing even when you are experiencing writer’s block!” (Hint of sarcasm). But, I don’t have time to write every day, I have a full-time job! Over the past year and a half, I have tried to write something new pretty consistently (every two weeks). But honestly, there have been many weeks that hasn’t happened. Sometimes, I get tired of writing and just need a break from it. It is after a break, that I begin to miss it. Whenever writer’s block happens, I usually take a break. I see writer’s block as a my body’s way of telling my mind that it wants to do something else: NOW! For some strange reason, the best ideas tap me on my right shoulder and wake me up in the middle of the night.

Can you tell us more about “Every Day Isn’t Perfect”? It’s a short read. It’s divided into five chapters: Chapter 1: Faith and Purpose, Chapter 2: Wisdom and Philosophy, Chapter 3: Friendship and Community, Chapter 4: Forgiveness and Love, and Chapter 5: Family and Hope. I didn’t want it to be too long. I wanted to write something that people could quickly and easily reference back to during different stages of their life. Every chapter may or may not apply at the present moment. One person may want to know more about improving their love life, while another person may want to know more about accomplishing their dreams. I do believe it’s a total life changer! I may be a bit biased. Lol! Just a bit…

  2. I love your ideas, Dr., may the Lord bless you. And this… “For some strange reason, the best ideas tap me on my right shoulder and wake me up in the middle of the night.”

  3. Hi K. L.
I believe in everything happening for a reason so when you liked my post about my Grandad (Memory Lines) I thought I’d stop in and check you out… what a blessing! Thank you for sharing your journey. I’m about to have my book self-published and it’s nice to know I’m not on my own. I’ve read your sample pages and I LOVE THEM! Congratulations and thank you for sharing your wisdom with the world.

  4. Self-exploration is about questions… sometimes the answers will come, though not necessarily in a prescribed time line nor sequence. Rules? We are in an era of social change in which traditions are being discarded and discovered (short stories and poetry are much more of a pre-Romanticism, novel form of communication). With people’s shortened attention spans and a multitude of options to fill any wakeful moment, short stories, poetry, and inspirational comments have as much importance, again, as 500 page novels, 13 episode TV programs, and 3 hours movies and operas. The object is not to eliminate options but to add to them. May your text add to the options.

  10. Congratulations on publishing your book! I greatly admire people like you who want to do good for people. Peace and love.

  11. Congratulations on your book! I can relate to some of the things you’ve mentioned such as “write what makes you happy” if I am proud of it, if I feel good about it then surely that’s what matters. You sort of re-enforced that. I’m totally new to this whole blogging world started only a few day ago. And you know what it makes ME feel good to write. Thank you. Good luck xx

  12. Words DO change people’s lives!! The impact of a small conversation… A comforting word…the impact that we have on people is truly incredible!! It starts with US… And by you writing and motivating others to impact the world is AMAZING! My motto is touch one person’s life at a time… GREAT JOB!! KEEP IT UP!! I LOVE IT!!

  13. Thank you so much for stopping by my friend! Please feel free to make yourself at home! To answer your question, it does take time to grow your readership. I think if you offer your best work, it will grow faster than you think! I look forward to getting to know you better Bassil! Hugs! And, make sure you go check out my book on Amazon! 🙂

  14. I’m so happy for you. I know one day, thanks to folks like you who follow your heart, I’ll do the same. I’m working on it. I love this quote from you. “I would encourage a writer to write whatever makes your heart happy. Write whatever makes your heart flutter. Write a story that you are proud of! Write a book that makes your mind say, “Wow! I wrote that!””

  15. Congrats on this massive accomplishment. I stumbled on your blog and it’s truly exceptional. Love what you said about the impact of words and people need inspiration and motivation now more than ever. If I may ask, as a new blogger on here, how do I grow my followers and readership? Or is it something that simply takes time. Best of luck and look forward to reading more. Cheers.

  16. Thank you so much for the congratulatory wishes! That is definitely why I decided to write my book: to give hope unto others as hope has been given unto me! 🙂

  17. Congratulations on the book! The anthology definitely isn’t dead, and you’re so right words can help people.

  19. Aww! Thank you for such kind words Laquita! I sure do hope you enjoy the book. Please let me know what you think after reading! Would love to know! 🙂

  20. I just downloaded your book. It’s waiting on my Kindle. Congratulations and good luck.

  21. Congrats! This is truly inspiring and the fact that you have a full time job but still found the time to write a book is pretty awesome. I just ordered your book….I hope you write more and continue to allow God to use you. God Bless!

  22. Thank you so much for your kind words and for ordering/reading my book my friend. Your support really does mean a lot to my heart. ❤

  23. I don’t think a lot people realize that you don’t have to have a kindle to read the books on Amazon. All you have to do is download the Free Kindle Reader Ap. But, I do understand. Thank you for your feedback on the sample pages. 🙂

  24. You are welcome my friend! Glad I could help. Be sure to check out my book, I think it contains so more useful info that could help! 🙂

  25. Sadly no. Actually I’d have liked to buy it, but I don’t have kindle (prefer to read books) and the site seemed to be for the US and I’m in the UK (there’s probably a way round that but like I said I’m not good with tech stuff). The part I did read was excellent though and I’d have liked to read more/

  26. I’m so proud of you Dr. Not only are you a great dentist but God has given you a voice and I thank God for you moving forward. I will get your book. Never a problem.

  27. Thank you my friend for sharing from your heart. I love inspiration (motivation and encouragement) too. Helping others gives you such a warm fuzzy feeling. Much success to you as well! 🙂

  28. Much success to you. Lol, as much as I love “love”, I do not enjoy writing about it, I love motivation and Encouragement as my overall theme. I feel the same way that one should follow your own style. God will make room for each of our gifts. Again, much success to you.

  29. I’d be more than happy to if I can figure out the link etc. I read the kindle intro and am not so good at tech stuff etc.

  30. Congratulations again, I’m really happy for you and wish you the very best! I don’t know you at all, but I feel like I do!

  31. Yay! I am so glad you love it Claire! You have officially made my day! I wish you could see me doing, “My Happy Dance!” Lol! Could you be so kind and leave me a review on Amazon? ❤ 😀

  32. Congratulations! I checked out your book on kindle and loved it. Best of all I loved the honesty, so many things you said resounded with me also.

  33. That’s so true. If people like your work you know that your words have resounded with them one way or another, but you can’t please everyone. If anything, you can take it as something like “these weren’t the words or story they were looking for, but it doesn’t make your work and effort any less valuable.” 😊

  34. Maria, when I read the email that read, “Your book is now live on Amazon.” I felt sick to my stomach. I asked myself, “What have you just done?” But, I think that is apart of being human. The uncertainty is what what scares us. We want to know that people people will appreciate what we have taken the time to write? But, I do believe it’s the authenticity that people appreciate. It’s the courage to tell your story. And, for those who don’t appreciate it…oh well! You can’t and won’t ever be able to please everybody. 🙂

  35. Maria, when I read the email that read, “Your book is now live on Amazon.” I felt sick to my stomach. I asked myself, “What have you just done?” But, I think that is apart of being human. 36. “Write whatever makes your heart happy.” Such simple, yet profound advice. Sometimes when I write I fall into the trap of a “will people/the commercial market like this?” mindset which leads to a lot of self-doubt and even self-hate. I have to remind myself every now and then to write as if noone is ever going to read it because that’s when my most authentic work is made. 😊

  37. Thank you for such encouraging words Stephanae. I needed to hear that. Also, I greatly appreciate you keeping up with me on social media. If we can’t count on ourselves to help make a difference, who can we count on? 🙂

  38. Congratulations on publishing your first inspirational book!! We definitely could use more positivity in the world today. I follow you on Twitter and your inspiring tweets always give me hope.
